Open Water Scuba Class with American Pro Diving Center

What students and or parents need to prepare and know before scuba class starts:

To start we have some answers to questions commonly asked by students and or parents new to diving; for example what is PADI, how old do you have to be, is there testing in the scuba class, will I pass and is it easy? These questions and more are answered following and if you have any other questions the Scuba Instructors at American Pro Diving Center are just a phone call away at 563-0041 or 1-(800)291-DIVE.

Awarded the rating of a 5 Star P.A.D.I. National Geographic I.D.C. Dive Training facility, American Pro Diving Center in Crystal River has the highest level one can achieve in the Scuba Diving industry. Our facility teaches under the dive instruction standards set by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and is the worlds largest recreational diving membership organization. These standards are to keep the student safe and to encourage safe diving practices.

Before the start of class a student file folder (in the education materials) is provided by American Pro Diving Center from PADI for the student and or parent to review. This student file folder has four main sections; medical questionnaire, safe diving practices, liability form, and emergency contact.  After reading the folder a signature on each section is required. If the student is a minor then a parent signature is also required. In the medical questionnaire section each question must be answered with a yes or a no. If there are any yes answers to any medical questions the student must secure written medical approval prior to the start of class. The medical form and supporting information for the doctor to read and sign can be printed out from this page (go to click here for the medical release).

The most common question is how old do you have to be to learn to scuba dive and the answer is 10 years old on up. Ten and eleven year olds must have a parent accompany the student in the class. Student age for class with out a parent in class is 12 on up and upon completion a Jr. Open Water certification card is given. Ages 15 on up are given an Open Water certification card. The JR. cards have depth limits and can be upgraded at age15 with no further class time.

All the educational materials (Book or CD) are provided and the students keep them for future reference. At the end of each of the 5 chapters are 15 knowledge review questions that are answered by the student prior to the start of class. These answers are to be written in the books or printed out off the CDs for review with the Instructor. In class each student must complete all quizzes and final exams with passing scores before entering the water. This is to ensure comprehension of safe diving practices and after leaving class the safe diving practices are known. To pass each of the four quizzes a student must score 75 % or higher which out of 10 questions (on each quiz) you can only miss 2 questions to pass that quiz. If 3 or more are missed the student reviews and can take a quiz B. To pass the final exam a student must score 75 % or higher which out of 50 questions you can only miss 13 questions to pass. If 14 or more are missed the student reviews and can take a final exam B. The questions on these quizzes and test are the same questions the student already answered in the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter and reviewed with the Instructor in class.

Can the student pass these quizzes and final exam? Yes, but the student must put forth the effort and time to want to learn. This includes going thru all five chapters of the educational materials and answering all of the knowledge reviews prior to the start of class. During class the students review their answers and correct any wrong answers with the Instructor. The tests are multiple choice and or true/false questions and ensure comprehension of safety while enjoying this fun and exciting sport of Diving.

After classroom time, starts the water activity in our onsite pool. To start each student must bring a bathing suit and a towelyour going to get wet. A 200 yard swim or 300 yard mask and snorkel swim starts your pool activities. This skill is not timed and you can choose any style of swimming. The next skill is the float for 10 minutes and you must not touch the bottom or the side walls of the pool. With completion of these two water skills starts the pool Scuba (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus).

The pool and open water skills teach (to name a few) the student comfort, proper scuba gear handling and personal care while above and below the water.  The Instructors gear up the students for the 5 dives in the pool and upon passing of the confined pool skills then they are off to the open water in Crystal River and Rainbow River. The same dive skills the students performed in the pool are demonstrated in the open water at depth of 20-30 feet. After passing the 4 open water dives a high five from the Instructor and congratulation are in order. Returning back to the dive center, log books are filled out and temporary certification cards are given. Permanent cards with the students picture on the card are sent from PADI to your home mailing address in about 4 to 6 weeks. The temporary cards are used till the permanent ones come in the mail. The certification cards do not have an expiration date but is recommended a scuba review if you havent dove in over a year.

After your open water class a new underwater world to explore is just a scuba tank away!  We recommend also taking the Advanced Open Water (A.O.W.) class to further your new skills and enjoyment of diving. This class is learning while diving and has less book work and tests than your O.W. class. Perfecting your buoyancy, navigation, and deeper depth comfort levels are just the start of this class. Because you have just started diving and not sure what to try next AOW has 5 dives to find out what you might like. Just some of the choices are learning underwater photography, search and recovery, identifying different types of fish, going deeper to wrecks, and a real favorite the underwater scooters (D.P.V.). If you look at the AOW page it shows the many different choices to pick and choose from and the guidance from your Instructor can help make your choices and experience more memorable.
